Networking (#9)

We discussed in class the mechanics of impromput speaking. It is time to make application to a networking situation. What would your 30 second commercial sound like if you unexpectly meant someone who could help you network yourself in a professional matter? Be sure to be clear about your objective. Promote yourself by illustrating a past experience, knowledge, skill or ability that you could bring to the situation. In what ways could you be sure to keep the contact vital after the conversation?

If I were to have 30 seconds with Harvey Weinstein, I would make sure that I don't waste my time checking to see if my zipper is down or if I peed myself.

I would quickly speak to him about my experiences as a filmmaker. My feature length screenplay won honorable mention in the 2005 Writer's Network Contest out of 10,000+ submissions. I've also worked closely with co-founder of sundance, and President of Sony Pictures on numerous projects.
Recently, I wrote and directed a short film, titled "Wrecked, Solitary" that is now being considered for numerous film festivals.

After the conversation, I would hand Mr. Weinstein my business card, and ask if there is a person I could reach to possibly set up a meeting a discuss these qualifications for working under him in the near future.

If I met someone who was capable of furthering my career, I would use the past, present, future technique. I would describe how I took the required classes, am in the process of becoming a teacher, and would like to work for them in the future if possible. To maintain contact I would either give my number, email address, or ask for a way to contact them in order to make sure it does not slip their mind.

If i was to accidentally come into contact with the principal of a local high school, I would use the opportunity to pitch to him why I would be an ideal candidate as an English teacher in his/her school. I would use the "Past present future" model. I would start out by introducing myself and telling the principal that i am very impressed with the school district and that i would love to become a part of it. I would tell him that I used to work as a waitress while completing my associates degree which taught me patience. I now currently work at a bank, which has taught me responsibility and having a professional attitude. I am also in the process of finishing my BA at Kean University, and would love to teach English at an amazing school district like the one that the principal works for!
